On Saturday, 27 th April, Unite Formby’s Poomsae Team were extremely excited to compete at the international ‘Poomsae Development Championship’ held in Belfast.
The students’ dedication and hard work preparing for the event paid off, achieving great results, at their first international competition! A massive well done to the participants representing Unite Formby, who constantly put everything into their training to reach their potential and never give up on their dreams.
Under the ‘Pairs Section’ Benjamin & Niamh got Silver whilst Erin & Kieran placed 4th . Under the ‘Mini Peewee’ Niamh got Gold and Erin got Silver. Zoe managed to get a personal best under the ‘Cadet Individual’ but missed medalling.
Unite would like to thank all the sponsors who helped out and made this event possible, including The Royal pub – Formby for generously donating funds from their race night. What a great community we live in!
‘Poomsae’ is a pre-defined sequence of martial arts moves, which are assessed at gradings and
competitions for technical accuracy of the techniques (stances, blocks, strikes, kicks and transitions between moves) as well as power, focus and tempo. Poomsae is one of the elements of Taekwondo, which also encompasses self-defence, sparring (as seen in the Olympics), board breaking and some exceptionally fancy kicking techniques!
Marital Arts training provides an opportunity to channel energy whilst learning and building key skills such as discipline, respect, self-defence, confidence, fitness, indomitable spirit and focus. Unite’s family-friendly clubs help students of all ages to see positive effects throughout their lives; it’s far more than just training for on the mats! Lisa Scott, Unite Formby’s Poomsae Coach, remarked, “Benjamin, Erin, Kieran, Niamh and Zoe have shown once again what can be achieved through hard work and commitment.
The trip itself was a fantastic social occasion for all the children and the parents, and we’re all looking forward to many more competitions in the future. I am super proud of every one of the students, not just for their amazing performance at the competition but the awesome team spirit that they showed across the whole weekend, which is so heart-warming.”
Unite Formby provides classes for students from the age of 3 years old through to Adult classes & Ladies Fitness Classes. They are currently offering one week of FREE UNLIMITED TRIAL classes to new students (subject to availability) together with a FREE Suit* upon joining.
If you fancy sharing a common interest and activity for life with your children, then try Unite’s family classes where parents can train alongside their children (minimum age 7yrs). Over the years they have observed that children that train with their parents have a significantly higher likelihood of achieving black belt, due to the shared interest and combined family commitment.
Unite has clubs in Formby, Lancaster, Ormskirk, Preston and Southport.
